What to See in Lisbon: 10 Essentials
Lisbon is the capital and largest city of Portugal, has more than two and a half million inhabitants counting all its metropolitan area and is one of the cities with the greatest history in the whole Portuguese country.
The city has an important tourist activity that is increasing in recent years. Historic or commemorative monuments and some of their neighborhoods are their main claims.
Walk through the Gran Plaza del Comercio
It is the largest square in the city and one of the most historic areas of Lisbon. Where today is the square, was located the Royal Palace which was destroyed in the earthquake that ended with much of the city in the eighteenth century. In the square you'll find the Triumphal Arch of Rua Augusta and the statue of Joseph I.
The Singular Cathedral of Lisbon, “La Sé”
It is one of the oldest buildings left in Lisbon, its construction dates from the 12th century and is one of the most representative of the great history the city has. Inside there is a museum called El Tesoro with remains of different cultures that have influenced the formation of Lisbon as it is now known.
The Tower of Belém: World Heritage Site
This large sixteenth century and 5-storey high checkpoint is today one of the most recognizable monuments in Lisbon, and since 1989 it is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The tower is divided into three rooms (governor, kings and audiences), a chapel and the terrace.
Admire the Beautiful Monument to Discoveries
This large sculptural complex represents a carabel with the infante Henrique el Navegante in commemoration of the discovery of the Azores, Madeira and Cape Verde Islands. The monument is adjacent to La Rosa de los Vientos, a large marble mosaic embedded in the ground with more than 50 meters in diameter.
The Interesting Jerónimos Monastery
Almost all tourists visiting Lisbon pass through the Jerónimos Monastery. This monument is very close to the Tower of Belém and the Monument to the Discoveries. The Monastery is a World Heritage Site and consists of a cloister, the church with the remains of Vasco de Gama and a museum located in some instances of the rest of the monastery.
Appreciate the magnificent Castle of San Jorge
This great fortification is one of the most visited monuments of Lisbon, dating from the 5th century, although its current shape and sizes are due to different extensions that were made until the sixteenth century. In addition to the fortification itself, the spectacular views from the castle are one of its main attractions.
Visit the Spectacular Museum of Cars
This National Museum has an important collection of historical carriages among which some of Pope Clement XI or Philip III of Spain stand out. It is one of the most visited museums in Lisbon and opened its doors to the public more than a hundred years ago.
Enjoy the Santa Justa Elevator
This elevator of more than 40 meters high, was a solution to the division that was produced in the city between the lower and upper part. It was launched in 1902 and from the first day it was a success. Today it is still useful as transport, but also as a curious tourist attraction.
Tour the City on Tram 28
It is part of the city's tram system but unlike the rest, this line preserves the original wooden trams of the line, giving a special touch to the trip. It also makes your journey through some of the most interesting neighborhoods of the city such as Graça, Mouraria or Barrio Alto.
Cross the bridge 25 de abril in Lisbon
This spectacular bridge over two kilometres long over the Tagus River is one of the icons of the city of Lisbon and one of the main access arteries of the city. The bridge has a plant for road traffic and another for the railway. A symbol of the city.
In addition to the listings, Lisbon has other notable places such as the large Vasco de Gama Bridge of more than 17 kilometres, Rossio Square and its great atmosphere, Marquis de Pombal Square and Cold Stove or Oceanário in the old trade fair grounds.
