About San Antonio
San Antonio is the third most populous town in the American state of Texas and is one of the cities that experienced the highest population growth in the country over the last 20 years.
Its origins date back to 1718 when the Spanish missionary Fray Antonio de Olivares founded the city of San Antonio de Bexar. Years later the city began to increase its population with residents from the Canary Islands, mainly from Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. This resulted in the creation of some of today’s important US historical monuments, such as the Cathedral of San Fernando.
Listed below are some of the main attractions of the city:
San Antonio River Walk
This is the most typical and characteristic area of San Antonio, formed by a number of canals alongside areas of historical interest. The River Walk (or Paseo del Rio) is traffic-free, but with boats that navigate through vegetation, walks, shops and restaurants, making this a pleasant and appealing place in San Antonio.
San Fernando Cathedral
It is the oldest cathedral in the United States, construction being completed in 1750 mainly by immigrants from the Canary Islands, although its present appearance shows Gothic elements dating from 1868.
Tower of the Americas
Tower of the Americas is a great structure 230 metres high that was built for the 1968 World Fair held in San Antonio. For many years it was the highest building of its type in the country. The tower offers spectacular views of the city and its surroundings.
San Antonio Missions National Historical Park
San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is a historical journey through some of the original churches built by the missionaries sent by the Spanish Crown in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to Christianise and convert the American Indians into Spanish citizens. There are presentations that can provide details, lead historical tours, present lectures and guided tours that help understand the origins of the city.
