About Koh Samui
Koh Samui is one of the larger islands of Thailand and also a place for mass tourism and plenty of hotel availability. The island has a population of about 50,000 inhabitants and is famous for its jungle interior and stunning white sand beaches.
Koh Samui has been inhabited since about the sixth century, but has been virtually isolated from the rest of the country until the late twentieth century. It became self-sufficient, on account of the vast amount of natural resources available on the island.
Until the 1970s the island hardly had any roads and traversing the 15 kilometres, from one end to the island to the other, could take a day cruise. With the arrival of tourism to the island, there has been a pronounced change in many respects. Currently there are more than 600 hotels in Koh Samui.
Here follows a review of the most important places to visit on the island.
Chaweng is one of the busiest beaches of the island and has all the facilities you might expect such as supermarkets, bars, pharmacies, sunbed services and some well-known clubs. The sand is white and water, turquoise.
This large beach is one of the busiest on Koh Samui. It’s appearance may not have the same appeal as Chaweng and it has fewer amenities, however there is a good balance of beach services and it offers a certain tranquillity.
Bo Phut Beach is beautiful, especially at night when the area is full of locals drinking and dining. It is the perfect beach to visit at the end of the day.
For many Silver Beach is considered one of the best beaches on the island, with its white sand and turquoise water. This quiet environment makes it possibly the most pleasant beach of Koh Samui.
Choeng Mon is a small, quiet beach with some fairly well-to-do facilities. It may not be top of the beach league, but it is the one most frequented by families, thanks to its services and peaceful atmosphere.
Although it can’t compare to the beauty evident in sculptures of Buddha from other parts of the country, it is worth going to the Big Buddha of Koh Samui, for, amongst other things, the breath-taking views.
Kho Hua Jook Temple
The Temple is definitely one of the must-visit places, if you travel to Koh Samu, where the tranquillity and views are priceless.
