The Districts of Lisbon: Part II – Alfama

In the previous article we named Lisbon the districts more generally, now let’s talk in more depth about the Alfama district. One of the best ways to enjoy the authentic taste of the city of Lisbon is walking in the Alfama district, one of the highest areas of Lisbon and retain the best test of the existence of Muslims in the city. In this district is where is located the famous castle of São Jorge.

The name “Alfama” is derived form “Al-Hamma” in Arabic, and referred to the existence of some baths or fountains within it. Today nothing remains of those ancient baths, but what most characterizes this district is the popular taste of its houses, small traders in the doors, its narrow streets, facades decorated with tiles, and many more things that give it popularity and simplicity air to Alfama, inhabited mostly by ordinary people who began to install themselves after the 1755 earthquake.

Attractions to visit in Alfama:

We can find in this district, charming building and monuments to visit, whether to be disappointed or feeling of having lost time, some of the best known are:

  • Castelo de São Jorge (castle of São Jorge): one of the most famous and most visited monuments city, is located at the top of the highest hill in Lisbon, was built by King Afonso Henriques (Alfonso I) after the conquest of 1147, in order to make the residence of the Portuguese royal family. A few centuries later, exactly in 1511 the king Manuel I decided to build a much more luxurious palace for the family in the current Plaça do Comercio, was when was given to the castle functions like prison, theater or store weapons. The 1755 earthquake destroyed great part of this monument was rebuilt in the time of Salazar.
  • Casa dos Bicos: Built in 1523 by Bras de Albuquerque in the tourist heart of the Alfama district. This Renaissance palace has an amazing sculpted stone facade covered with in peak form, which perfectly imitates diamond tips, style was on the rise in Mediterranean Europe. The doors and windows, distributed in a non-current, give this palace a unique charm.
  • Miradouro de Santa Luzia (viewpoint of Santa Luzia): located in the church of Santa Luzia, hence its name, and from which we have a splendid panoramic view of the Alfama and the Tagus River, recommended visit to contemplate the beauty of this district.

Apart from these tourist charms, the best visit to Alfama is walking through its streets, to discover its buildings, balconies, stalls, people, etc …
